FAQ

Common questions

Which calculator tells me how big my gold position should be?

The position size calculator answers that. You enter your account balance, the percentage you are willing to risk and your stop distance in pips, and it returns a lot size for XAU/USD. Because 1 standard lot is 100 oz and one pip is 0.01, a stop of a few dollars is a large pip count, so the output is often a small fraction of a lot.

What is the difference between the pip value and profit calculators?

The pip value calculator shows what one pip is worth for a given lot size, which is the building block for every other number. The profit calculator goes further and multiplies that value by your entry, exit and lot size to show the result of a completed trade. Use pip value first when you are sizing a position.

How do I work out the margin a gold trade will tie up?

The margin calculator takes your lot size, the current XAU/USD price and the leverage on your account and returns the margin requirement. Leverage is a cap rather than a target, so run the figure at the leverage you actually have. It also helps you see how much free margin remains if the trade moves against you.

Do the calculators account for spreads, commissions or swaps?

The calculators use the inputs you provide, so any cost you want reflected must be entered by you. Spread and commission depend on your broker, account type and the time of day, and swap depends on the position direction and how long you hold it. Check your provider's published schedule and factor those costs into your own figures.

What are pivot points used for on a gold chart?

The pivot point calculator derives central, support and resistance levels from the previous session's high, low and close. Traders use them as reference levels for stops, targets and areas where price may pause. They are a map, not a signal, and on XAU/USD they are best read alongside the session you actually trade.
